" Finis ! Finis ces passages franchement noise où les déflagrations sonores se faisaient légions et où les déferlantes d'électricité suprenaient par leur prompitude et leur puissance. Ici, tout est posé, parfaitement maîtrisé mais surtout, Ulan Bator réalise avec Vegetale un album incroyablement posé, presque calme et serein... "presque" seulement. Car cette tension qui caractérisait l'essence même du groupe par le passé n'a peut-être jamais été aussi présente, aussi menaçante. Dès "Lumière Blanche", l'atmoshère prend une tournure crispante. Les guitares remplissent sournoisement l'espace, soutenues par une rythmique placide et surtout par le chant d'Amaury Cambuzat, qui n'avait sans doute jamais été autant mis en avant auparavant. Les compositions sont enfièvrées, gonflées par une intensité rare et peut-être profondément belle; à l'image de ce "Embarquement" qui ne demande qu'à exploser. Mais Ulan Bator a choisi la contenance. Plus fin, plus subtile, mais sans doute plus intéressant également. Jouer sur la corde sensible qui consiste à susciter l'intérêt, éveiller nos sens ou tout simplement, à subjuguer et à tenir en haleine; voilà ce qui semble être désormais le crédo du trio français. Capable de jouer dans plusieurs registres, Ulan Bator nous gratifie de quelques perles. Ainsi, "Fièvre Hectique" se complaît dans un premier temps dans l'urgence, grâce à une dynamique implacable et parfaite, avant de se poursuivre dans un final preque envoûtant tant l'ambiance développée se fait étrange et enveloppante; tandis que "Hart", dont le début semble être la suite logique de "Fièvre Hectique"; en vient par la suite à briller par sa fragilité apparente, sa douceur et sa beauté que doivent sûrement aujoud'hui jalouser les membres d'Explosions In The Sky. Ainsi, Vegetale est la troisième production d'Ulan Bator; le troisième opus qui permet au groupe d'afficher alors une discographie exemplaire. Cet album est tout simplement aussi indispensable que le sont ses prédecesseurs. " [X_Jpbowersock] — 18/20

Just uploaded on our YouTube a very rare Ulan Bator live video from 1998: Amaury Cambuzat, Olivier Manchion and Franck Lantignac performing LUMIERE BLANCHE at the PezNer (Villeurbanne/Lyon, France). The PezNer was the best french venue in the '90s.

Short biography :

" AMAURY CAMBUZAT and OLIVIER MANCHION plays together since 1987. They've founded Ulan Bator in 1993 in Paris, while building a studio recording in a disused chalkmine. The drummer Franck Lantignac joined and they started to record in the chalkmine and they produced the 3 first albums ("Ulan Bator", "2 Degrees", "Vegetale") together with Les Disques du Soleil du Soleil et de l'Acier. in 1996 also starts a long relationship with legendary "art-errorists" Faust through a french tour (The first meeting by Zappi Diermaier, Jean-Hervé Peron, Manchion and Cambuzat has been just released as "Collectif Metz/Faust"). Ulan Bator then performs in prestigious festivals as Les Transmusicales de Rennes, Roskilde... and is released in Italy (starting a long love story) by Cpi ("Polaire"and "Vegetale" releases, plus several tours sharing stages with C.S.I., Marlene Kuntz..), then Sonica for "Ego:Echo" : In 1999 Ulan Bator recorded its "Ego:Echo" (Young God Records), produced by Michael Gira (Swans, Angels of Light...) together with drummer Matteo Dainese. Later in 2002 was released "OK:KO" from the Ego:Echo tours and demo sessions. Late 2001, Olivier left,... until the summer 2005, founding in the meantime Permanent Fatal Error (releasing "Law Speed" in 2004), performing live with Damo Suzuki (Can) -check out for the 2003 Paris concert released as "Hollyaris"-, recording with French Doctors, Bias! ... During that period Ulan Bator as Amaury Cambuzat (with Dainese on drums, Manuel Fabbro on bass and Egle Sommacal on guitar) recorded "Nouvel Air", mixed by Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), and then (without Sommacal) then "Rodeo Massacre" (january'05), both released by Jestrai and performing like 200 gigs in Italy and France. After a 4 years complete silence, Olivier and Amaury meet by "pure chance" at a Lantignac's performance.. and started to perform again together in june 2005 while becoming both Faust members, and invite Franck Lantignac for a special Ulan Bator reunion (original trio) for the avantgarde-festival (powered by Faust/Peron). Thenlater, in autumn '05, Amaury and Olivier did with FAUST a crazy UK tour ("Faust in Autumn": a 3 cds Box + dvd by Dirter). From there the following was quite obvious : The original nucleo was back again together, but only for a tour entitled "D-Struction" tour (jan/feb 2006 - Italy + Sloveny) : Cambuzat/Manchion/Lantignac. The 2nd chapter's been Cargo Culte, aka Ulan Bator Duo (Amaury + Olivier), touring late spring'06. The 3rd will be a new album to be recorded late 2006 with the new drummer ALESSIO GIOFFREDI (Dilatazione) "
